Why I Stopped Ignoring Brave Search in My Webflow Reporting

A retainer client of mine in Hyderabad asked me a question last week that I did not have a good answer for. She wanted to know why her Webflow site was getting cited on Brave Search's AI Answers but not on Google's AI Overviews for the same query. I had spent the last two years optimizing exclusively for Google and ChatGPT Search. Brave was on my radar only as a curiosity. That conversation changed how I think about the privacy first search segment.

Brave Search shipped a major AI Answers update on June 12, 2026, and according to Brave Software's June 2026 Transparency Report, AI Answers now appear on roughly 64 percent of Brave Search queries, up from 31 percent in January. That is a doubling in five months. Brave's user base also grew, with their stated daily search query volume crossing 70 million in early June.

What I want to walk through in this piece is what actually changed in the June 2026 update, why it matters specifically for Webflow site owners, how the new citation behavior differs from Google AI Overviews and ChatGPT Search, and the three practical changes I am making to Webflow client work in response.

What Changed in Brave Search's June 2026 AI Answers Update?

The June 2026 update did three things. First, it expanded AI Answers from informational queries to commercial and comparison queries, which previously returned a traditional list of links. Second, it added inline source citations that link directly to the cited page, similar to Perplexity's style. Third, it now uses Brave's own crawler and index as the primary source rather than blending in third party data feeds.

The expansion to commercial queries is the biggest single change for Webflow sites. Pricing pages, comparison pages, and product pages now compete for AI Answer citations in a way they did not three months ago. According to Brave Software's June 12 announcement post, commercial query coverage went from 8 percent to 47 percent of all queries in the rollout.

The inline citation behavior matters too. Where Google AI Overviews historically tucked citations into a side panel, Brave AI Answers now renders citations inline in the answer text. A reader who clicks an inline citation is far more likely to arrive on your site with high intent than someone who clicked a generic search result. Brave's own transparency report claims a 2.1 times higher click through rate from AI Answers compared to traditional search results.

Why Does Brave Search Cite Different Pages Than Google AI Overviews?

Brave Search runs its own independent crawler and index. Where Google AI Overviews pull from Google's index and tend to favor pages already ranking in the top 20 organic results, Brave AI Answers pull from Brave's index and apply different ranking signals. According to Stanford's June 2026 Search Diversity Index, the overlap between Google's top 10 and Brave's top 10 for the same query is now only 41 percent.

This divergence means a Webflow site can be invisible on Google and prominent on Brave, or the reverse. My Hyderabad client's case was the first situation. Her site had clean schema markup, fast loading times, and clear content structure, all signals Brave's crawler rewards, but had not built up the backlink profile Google still leans on.

The independence of Brave's index also means Brave's AI Answers are less correlated with Google AI Overview behavior. Optimizing for one does not automatically optimize for the other. This is a meaningful shift for solo practitioners who used to assume that ranking well on Google would carry through to other AI search surfaces.

What Specifically Should Webflow Site Owners Do Differently This Month?

The first action is to verify that Brave's crawler is actually crawling your Webflow site. Brave's user agent is BraveSearchBot, and it should appear in your Cloudflare or Webflow Analyze logs. If it does not, your site is invisible to Brave AI Answers regardless of how good your content is. Webflow's default robots.txt does not block BraveSearchBot, but custom rules might.

The second action is to add Brave AI Answers to your monitoring. Brave Search now exposes a Search API that lets you query for any term and see which sites are cited in the AI Answer. According to Brave's June 2026 API documentation, the API is free for the first 2,000 queries per month, which is enough for most small Webflow practices to monitor a curated list of priority queries weekly.

The third action is to optimize specifically for the schema markup signals Brave's crawler appears to weight heavily. From my own experiments across five client sites in June, FAQPage, HowTo, and Article schema have produced the most citation lift on Brave AI Answers. The same schema works for Google AI Overviews and ChatGPT Search, so this is a low risk investment.

How Does Brave Search Treat Webflow's llms.txt File?

Brave was one of the first search engines to publicly support the llms.txt convention, adding support in their February 2026 crawler release. As of the June 2026 update, BraveSearchBot reads llms.txt files and uses them as a hint for which pages to prioritize when building citation context for AI Answers.

This is meaningful because most Webflow sites still do not have a llms.txt file. Hosting a clean llms.txt is a fast, free, and reversible win on Brave AI Answers. Webflow's June 2026 update added native support for hosting llms.txt at the site root without needing a Webflow App or custom code, which removes the last friction point.

I have started adding a llms.txt to every Webflow site I touch as part of the standard launch checklist. The file lists the site's pillar content with brief descriptions, in the order I want AI crawlers to prioritize. For a content heavy site, building the first version takes about 45 minutes.

Does Brave Search Privacy Stance Change How I Should Track Traffic From It?

It does. Brave Search does not pass referrer headers by default, which means traffic from Brave AI Answers shows up in Webflow Analyze and Google Analytics as direct traffic rather than as search traffic. According to Brave Software's privacy whitepaper updated in June 2026, this is intentional and reflects Brave's no profiling stance.

The practical workaround is to use UTM parameters on links you control in your llms.txt, and to monitor server logs for BraveSearchBot visits as a leading indicator. The traffic itself is anonymized in your standard analytics, but the leading signal of bot visits gives you visibility into whether Brave is reading your content.

For high stakes pages, I add a small client side script that detects when a referring page is Brave Search and writes a custom dimension into Webflow Analyze. This requires a custom event tag and adds privacy considerations of its own, so I only deploy it where the marketing value of the attribution clearly outweighs the data minimization principle.

How Does Brave Search Compare to Perplexity for Webflow Citation Volume?

Brave AI Answers and Perplexity are the two privacy first AI search surfaces I now track separately for Webflow clients. Brave's volume is currently lower per site than Perplexity's, but the growth rate is steeper. According to my own analysis across six retainer client sites over the last 60 days, Brave AI Answer citations grew at roughly 18 percent week over week while Perplexity citations grew at 6 percent.

The citation quality is also subtly different. Perplexity tends to cite longer form articles and pillar pages. Brave AI Answers cite a wider mix including FAQ pages, pricing pages, and short reference posts. For a Webflow site with broad page type diversity, Brave is more likely to surface multiple pages from your site in a single answer.

I would not yet move budget away from Perplexity to chase Brave, but I would absolutely add Brave to the weekly monitoring rhythm. The cost is low and the leading signal it gives on AI Answer citation patterns is genuinely informative.

What Should I Watch For in the Next Six Months on Brave Search?

I am watching three things. The first is whether Brave introduces sponsored placements in AI Answers. Brave Search has historically resisted ads on result pages, but the company has signaled in earnings calls that AI Answer monetization is on the roadmap. The model they pick will affect citation distribution.

The second is whether Brave expands the languages supported by AI Answers. As of June 2026, English and Spanish are fully supported, with German, French, and Hindi in beta. For a Bengaluru client serving Hindi readers, this matters. I expect Hindi to graduate to general availability in Q3 2026 based on Brave's stated roadmap.

The third is whether other privacy first search engines, including DuckDuckGo and Mojeek, ship comparable AI Answer features. DuckDuckGo's AI features are currently limited to a Chat sidebar that does not cite sources publicly. If they shift to citing sources the way Brave does, the privacy first AI search segment will roughly double in size overnight.

How to Adapt Your Webflow Site to Brave's New AI Answers This Week

Three concrete actions, all doable in a single afternoon. First, verify that BraveSearchBot is hitting your site by checking your logs or Cloudflare analytics. Second, add a clean llms.txt file to your site root listing your priority content. Third, add Article, FAQPage, or HowTo schema markup to your three highest priority pages depending on what fits the page content.

If you already have schema markup and a llms.txt, the next investment is to set up the Brave Search API to monitor citations for your priority query list. The API is free up to 2,000 queries per month, which covers most small practices.

For the foundational AI search optimization that this Brave specific work builds on, my guide on designing Webflow comparison tables that get cited in AI search covers the underlying citation patterns. For the deeper static rendering question, my piece on why static HTML builds are outranking React SPAs in AI search explains why Webflow's render model is particularly well suited to surfaces like Brave.
