What is answer engine optimization?
Answer engine optimization, or AEO, is the practice of structuring content so AI systems quote it in their answers. It overlaps with SEO but optimizes for a different outcome. SEO wins a ranking position. AEO wins a citation inside ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, or Google AI Overviews, where a buyer reads the answer without clicking through.
Why does ranking #1 no longer guarantee citations?
Because AI engines pick sources differently than the classic ranking system. Ahrefs analyzed 863,000 keyword SERPs and found only about 38% of AI Overview citations come from Google's top 10, down from roughly 76% in July 2025. The rest now come from positions 11 to 100 and beyond. Top rank no longer means top citation.
How do AI engines pick what to cite?
They evaluate passages, not just whole pages. An AI engine pulls the specific paragraph that answers the query, wherever it sits in the rankings. Clear, self-contained passages with a direct answer win. This is why a page ranking at position 30 can still get cited if its answer block is cleaner than the page ranking first.
What content structure earns citations?
Answer-first structure. Kevin Indig's Growth Memo analyzed 18,012 citations and found a ski-ramp pattern: 44.2% of citations come from the first 30% of a page's text. Open each section with a 2 to 3 sentence answer, then expand. Front-load the conclusion. AI engines weight the opening heavily, so bury nothing that matters.
Which schema still helps AI?
This one is genuinely debated. Some studies, like Mersel AI, claim schema lifts LLM discoverability by up to 67%. Others, including a May 2026 Ahrefs analysis, found adding schema produced no major citation uplift across AI Overviews, AI Mode, and ChatGPT. The honest answer: schema helps Google understand your page, and that indirect benefit is worth keeping.
When do citations start appearing?
Slower than rankings move. AI engines re-crawl and re-embed content on their own schedules, often weeks behind a publish or update. There is no Search Console equivalent that shows citation counts directly yet. Track brand mentions in AI answers manually or with a monitoring tool, and expect a lag of two to four weeks after you ship.
Where should the answer go on the page?
In the first 30% of the text, and at the top of each section. The Growth Memo data is clear that opening passages dominate citations. For a blog post, that means a direct answer in the first paragraph under each H2. For a homepage, it means the answer-first hero. Lead with the answer, then support it.
Should I track share of voice?
Yes, if AI referrals matter to your funnel. Share of voice measures how often your brand appears in AI answers for your key queries versus competitors. Mersel AI found brands present on four or more platforms are 2.8 times more likely to appear in ChatGPT recommendations, a figure with medium confidence. Presence compounds, so track it.
Can a small brand out-cite big ones?
Yes, more easily than it can out-rank them. Citations reward the clearest answer, not the biggest domain. A focused B2B SaaS site with sharp, well-sourced answer blocks can get cited above a generic enterprise page. McKinsey data suggests owned brand properties make up only 5 to 10% of AI sources, so third-party presence matters too.
Will AI Mode kill my organic traffic?
It will reshape it, not erase it. AI Mode passed 1 billion monthly users at Google I/O on May 19. More answers happen without a click. But cited brands still earn trust and referral traffic, and Seer Interactive found AI-cited brands see higher click-through rates on the same queries. Optimize to be the cited source, not just a ranked one.
