The supply chain risk is structural, the attack pattern is repeatable, and most small studios have not done the audit work that would prevent the same kind of incident at their own practice.
What Actually Happened With Vercel and Context.ai in April 2026?
An attacker compromised Context.ai, an AI tool that had OAuth access to a Vercel employee's Google Workspace. Through that connection, the attacker reached internal Vercel systems and gained access to a subset of customer environment variables marked as non-sensitive. Vercel published its security bulletin on April 19, with CEO Guillermo Rauch publicly attributing the entry point to the Context.ai compromise.
The detail that matters is the entry vector. The attacker did not breach Vercel's infrastructure directly. The aggregate risk surface is much larger than most Partners realize, and the audit to clean it up takes a couple of focused hours rather than a full day. The work is overdue at most studios.

Sensitive secrets include Webflow Data API tokens, OAuth client secrets, webhook signing keys, payment gateway keys, and any credentials that grant write access to client sites or financial systems. These should never appear in environment variables marked as non-sensitive, never get logged, and never get passed to third-party tools without explicit security review.
Non-sensitive variables typically include public configuration like site domains, public API endpoints, or feature flags that affect display rather than security behavior. The distinction matters because non-sensitive variables tend to get less scrutiny in storage and access logs, which is exactly why the Vercel breach exposed them. Re-flagging anything that touches authentication or authorization as sensitive is the immediate fix every Partner can do this week. How Do I Audit Every OAuth App Connected to My Google Workspace?
The audit is straightforward. In Google Workspace admin, go to Security, then API Controls, then Manage Third-Party App Access. Add a security incident notification clause that defines what counts as material and what timeline applies. The contracts do not need to be punishing. They need to be clear. Most clients are reasonable about AI tooling once they understand which tools the practice uses and what controls are in place. The clarity itself is a competitive advantage because most agencies have not thought about this carefully. And separation of credentials between client work and personal experimentation, so that a tool you tried on personal projects never gets access to client systems by accident.
The fourth control is harder. Develop the muscle to say no to AI tool grants that ask for more access than the workflow needs. Most AI tools default to broad scopes because it is easier for the tool builder. Every grant is a permanent attack surface until you actively revoke it. The discipline of pausing during onboarding and asking whether each scope is genuinely required would have prevented most of the OAuth-related incidents that have hit the industry in 2026. The discipline is undramatic and effective.

Honest framing helps. AI tools are powerful and the supply chain risk is real, but the risk is manageable with basic discipline. Walk the client through your specific controls, name the tools you use, and explain why those tools were chosen and how they are scoped. The conversation usually lands well because clients appreciate transparency more than they appreciate confident assurances that everything is fine.
The mistake is to either dismiss the risk (which clients see through immediately) or overemphasize it (which makes them anxious about every AI deliverable). The right tone is calm professionalism.
